Following my army service I started to work as an Internet Service Provider, as a Technical Supporter. After two months I was promoted to Technical Support Supervisor. One day my supervisor came and told me I had been selected for Manager training. This six-day mandatory course teaches the basics of management and leadership at my company. The course was to take place out of town and included accommodation arrangements. I enthusiastically accepted the offer. Following the training, I would be promoted to head of a team of eight supporters. This would be an excellent opportunity to merge my technical knowledge with the leadership skills I had developed in the army. I was also excited about the new position’s incentives, including a 20% increase in salary, which I desperately needed for a trip to Europe. I had been looking forward to this trip since my army service.

Then, two weeks before the course date, I learned that my girlfriend of two years had to have surgery, and it was to be performed during the week of the course. Recovery from this procedure would be extremely painful. I knew her family would be by her side, but I felt strong instincts to support her by being there myself. On the other hand, the course was a big opportunity for my career development, and I had waited a long time for it. To resolve the dilemma, I took several steps before reaching a decision. First, I verified that the surgery date was unchangeable. Then, I approached my supervisor and explained the situation. He told me that the next Manager training would take place only the next year. He checked the possibility of making an exception and allowing me to become a manager without going through the training, but it was not approved. He also emphasized that the company had made large efforts to enable the expensive training, so they expected me to do my utmost to participate. I also consulted with close friends and family, including my girlfriend. They all insisted that I should take the course. A week before, after wrestling with this dilemma, I made my decision

I informed my supervisor that due to the circumstances, I would not be able to participate in the Manager’s training. I stood by my girlfriend’s side during the hospitalization and the two-week recovery. Fortunately, the procedure went well, and I’m sure that my presence contributed to her comfort and relief. My supervisor got over my decision and promised to see what he could do about getting me into the next year’s training. During my army service, I rejected several offers to participate in an officer’s training, so it wasn’t my first time turning down a promotion. However, in this case, I felt very comfortable and confident about it. I am proud of my decision, and to have put the needs of my loved one before my gain. After all, that’s the spirit of being a true “Supporter”…

I was raised by my mother, with my two older brothers leaving home when I was nine. From a young age, I tried to assume more responsibilities for myself and learned to be independent when needed, a characteristic that has been there throughout my life.

At the age of eighteen, I was drafted into the army. For a year before that, I prepared myself physically and mentally by jogging on the beach three times a week and carrying sacks of sand up the hills. Subsequently, I was accepted to one of the army’s elite units. Now, I had to adjust to working in highly demanding conditions in a hierarchical organization, and as an independent person that was a great change. Nevertheless, this reality taught me priceless lessons.

In the army, I discovered the meaning of true teamwork. I have done things with my team that I couldn’t have done without mutual help, such as walking 50 miles overnight with 45-pound weights. There I learned to share all I had, rely on others, and put the group’s interests before mine. The intense schedule taught me to work more effectively and better manage my time. I believe that these abilities will pay off for my Kellogg teams. I will know how to create the necessary synergy in my team and help bring efficient results by prioritizing tasks and stressing a joint effort.

At the age of twenty, I became a platoon commander in charge of 45 soldiers 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Leading them in training and operational activity was the easy part. The challenge was in dealing with each individual’s problems. Moreover, many of my subordinates came from totally different backgrounds than mine. I remember meeting a 24-year-old soldier. He was telling me about his difficulties and I was sitting there stunned by his life story. Such experiences taught me how to approach and deal with diverse people, and I sure know what it means to help someone new. I will bring this knowledge with me to Kellogg.

When I was released from the army I went on the first of three trips, totaling 20 months, in Asia, Central, and South America, and Australia. On these trips, I had an opportunity to meet people from places across the globe. Traveling alone sometimes taught me to interact and relate to new people. In the first year at Kellogg, the dynamics would be quite similar, and I hope I can contribute to the acclimatization of my fellow students.

Last but not least is my consultancy experience from the past 3 years. During this time I had the chance to work in a wide range of organizations from different sectors: finance, infrastructure, pro-bono, heavy industry, and more. I was involved in and led projects dealing with the establishment of new units, standardization, and reorganization projects. Mostly, I dealt with strategic implementation projects. Therefore, I bring with me diverse knowledge and experience in creating and managing a change in some of my country’s largest organizations, which operate both locally and internationally. I would love to share the insights I gained with my classmates, and I look forward to enriching my world with the insights of others.

I admit I’ve always been a bit of a geek. My biggest passion as a teenager was playing Laser Tag, a laser arcade competition. Laser Quest, the town’s premier arcade, was the center of my world back then, and where I was employed as an instructor.

However, Laser Quest was not a very lucrative establishment. It was teetering on the verge of bankruptcy, but it had a few young, repeat customers. These loyal customers represented untapped potential, so I proposed establishing a Laser League to spur continuous competition and more social interaction. The league was a hit, greatly increasing our revenues.

No less importantly, I learned a vital lesson, which became one of my life’s guiding values: If I realize the full potential to make a change and take the initiative, I can make a real difference. With time I learned that empowering others to do the same is equally important, and can lead to unusual impact and results that were seemingly impossible.

I remember the first time I felt I could encourage others to improve their lives. Before I started my undergraduate degree I traveled in India and spent 3 weeks in a small village. Our group befriended our guesthouse owners, who a year before experienced a disaster when a fire burned their guesthouse and home. Now, they were very poor and considered relinquishing their business and moving away. Yet I was eager to help them stay.

While analyzing the situation, I noticed that most guesthouses around don’t have a modern toilet room. I told the family that if they were able to build a toilet, their guest house would be immensely more attractive. The father was reluctant, saying “Costs are too high.” I then pitched the idea to other guests and convinced them to help build the toilet room.

We traveled for half a day to buy the necessary materials and everybody helped to build the restroom, which was up and running in 3 days. The word was out, and more tourists came to spend their time in the guesthouse, helping cover the debts of rebuilding their homes. Again, I learned that initiative and empowering others can make a real difference.

I took this attitude with me to my professional career as well. I was a young project manager appointed with the development of the international corporate site of one of the largest food companies in my country. Soon after, my client rejected the initial site design, saying it had no “vision or excitement in it”. I quickly realized that to succeed in this project, we would need to deliver quality creative concepts.

However, this was a problem. For one thing, our company rarely provides creative services. Moreover, the project’s budget included no allocation for such services. After some thought, I realized that some of our employees were skilled enough to produce quality creative concepts. I then decided to pitch to management forming our in-house creative team.

I talked with my CEO, but he was initially against my idea. A day later I came up with my final “sales pitch”. I offered that we do a pilot by delivering an initial creative concept just for the site’s homepage and presenting it to the client. I was thrilled when my CEO agreed to give my idea a chance.

I assembled and led a 7-member creative team, we built a new creative concept and presented it to our client. The client‘s Corporate Brand Manager was excited: “This creative team adds huge value to our project” he said. He then agreed to enlarge the original project budget by 15% to include our creative services. Eventually, we delivered the corporate site and it was approved by our client, securing $1.2 million in revenues.

This experience reinforced what I already knew – if I succeed in empowering peers and subordinates to realize their full potential, we can do great things together as a team. This is exactly the attitude I want to take with me to Kellogg.

Surrounded by fellow students, the sharpest minds from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds, I want to do my best to empower fellow students and work together as a team to get the most out of our MBA experience, in study groups, group projects, and any program we take part in.

Moreover, I would love to share both my international and corporate experience and insights with fellow students during classes and in Kellogg’s clubs, such as the Entrepreneurship Club, while helping other students realize their initiatives.

About four months after I began as Mobile Publisher Account Manager at an international digital marketing company, our company started to face hard times. Company stock was down and there was tremendous pressure on everyone to improve performance and create new sales revenues.

During a meeting with one of my clients, he asked me if my company supported the ‘in-banner video.’ I had no idea what this meant, but I told him I’d look into it and get back to him right away. Diving in, I started learning about video on mobile and discovered it had great profit potential for my company since we had both the clients and the supplier to support this segment. However, at that time, we lacked both the infrastructure and technological capabilities necessary.

I gathered a few members of the development team to brainstorm options and came away with the understanding that it would take a one-month commitment of four personnel for my company to develop sufficient technical capabilities to support this segment. Convincing my manager and his superiors would not be an easy task – not in such a difficult time. They would need to delay other assignments and invest heavily in the development and marketing of a new segment with unclear consequences. I needed evidence that would gain their buy-in.

I talked to all of my clients and asked co-workers to talk to their clients about this segment, to understand its real value. I then pitched the idea to my team leader and technical manager, meeting each of their objections with facts gathered during my research. Ultimately, they approved the first milestone of the project: developing the technical capabilities. X months later, I presented the technology and won the green light for a pilot with selected clients. I selected several target clients, sourced video ads from a co-worker, placed the advertisements, and closely monitored their performance. The pilot’s results did all the convincing for me – one client alone had revenue that grew from $100/day to $7,000 a day. Management took one look and began approving astronomical marketing budgets to promote the segment, which today is one of my company’s biggest business drivers – not only for advertisers but for publishers, as well.

I am most proud that I was able to produce and implement a winning business solution under pressure, a solution that helped my company turn a corner and regain its competitive edge.

Red Bull Gives You Wings. This signature tagline was established on Day 1 and is a promise brought to life through content marketing. As the originator of the energy drink category, Red Bull’s heritage is in high-octane action sports where the need for energy is apparent. However, to keep pace with the evolving consumer landscape I worked with my national counterparts to identify new segments for growth. In our first year launching a fitness-focused campaign, my colleagues opted for small, local activations to test and learn from our first foray into this market. Instead, I chose a bolder strategy. My manager empowered me to make a splash with a share-worthy social experience so I set out to build the next engaging event for our brand, with indoor cycling (spinning) rather than mountain biking as the discipline.

The most critical step in the process was developing a strategically sound brief. This document outlined the target consumer, campaign objectives, and key timelines that I often referenced while assembling the project team. As a complex, matrix organization, getting buy-in from key stakeholders at headquarters was paramount to the event’s success. Specifically, I collaborated with my regional sports manager to design the event logo and after several revisions, I presented the branding plan to our vice president of sports for final approval. The plan required executive sign-off because not only were we pushing the limits with a new event category, but I also found new ways to reduce spending through an in-kind partnership. I worked with our agency partner to identify a stationary bike manufacturer that would donate $140K in new equipment in exchange for branding at the event.

To execute the event, I built a locally based team with experience producing large-scale events. Through weekly meetings, I provided clear direction for each role in the project and created excitement for the end goal. Everything was going according to plan until we learned of a major restructuring that would impact our marketing organization and leave many of us in an uncertain position. My main challenge was keeping the team progressing in sync while working behind the scenes to secure my future within the organization. In the end, the event was acknowledged as a global best practice for evolving event marketing and recognized for media outcomes that significantly outperformed company benchmarks for social media content.

I learned a great deal from this experience, both professionally and personally. Early on in the project, I realized that if I wanted to make the experience and subsequent content share-worthy I should enlist the help of media specialists. As a leader, I acknowledged what I didn’t know and focused on establishing myself as a conductor of an orchestra of experts to pull off a successful event.

It would be an understatement to say the telecommunications industry is on the brink of a complete transformation. Networks like 3G, 4G (LTE), and recently 5G will now serve more than just smartphones. IoT and digital transformations will take us to new paradigms where complex telecommunications networks will enable new use cases like smart cities, self-driving cars, remote monitoring of medical patients, etc. This new penetration into adjacent industries will have a profound impact on the sociopolitical environment, laws of engagement, and social interactions. The associated commercial models will have to be changed. My goal is to help shape the networking industry, promoting technology that would make it more affordable, safer, and easier for everybody to communicate, travel around the world, or get medical treatment.

Therefore, my ultimate goal is to launch my own business in the telecommunications domain, where I would be free to drive innovation in a socially responsible, affordable way and at a faster pace. To acquire the necessary skills and experience, I intend to first transition into a C-level role in a mid-sized startup in this domain. The first and the most realistic step to set me up for success in this journey would be to move up to the VP-Sales Domain head position at ______, where I will own the complete business P&L center. To achieve these goals, I have placed myself in the center of activities in the telecommunications industry and established close relationships with AT&T – the world’s biggest operator in terms of revenue and a telecommunications frontrunner. My efforts to win AT&T over as a client resulted in a huge achievement for our company – it’s now a $2.5B account, and for me – I was promoted to work as VP, Head – Technology.

While my technical expertise helped me get this far, to leap into the VP of Sales role, I need to bridge the gap in handling global business negotiations, delivery of cross-functional transformational projects, and managing complex P&L. Therefore, Kellogg EMBA classes, such as International Finance led by Professor Rebelo or Visualization by Persuasion with Professor Franconeri, are exactly the type of learnings I need at this point. Interestingly, while I was searching for business schools, I came across the tag “Think Bravely” on Kellogg’s website, and it hit home for me. I have been central to many transformations from our first-generation telecommunication systems to the current 5G rollout. One thing that has been common in all these transitions was the fear of the unknown, and all through this time, I pushed my customers to think bravely. I believe, based on my research and a few rounds of discussions with admission officers Christine E. Post, Alex Llerena, and Michelle Leonatti, that Kellogg is the school that can best help me prepare for my current challenges and future endeavors in brave new technologies.

I was aware that I was different as a conclusion from my trip to Nigeria. Traveling to Lagos to set up a new Check Point office was one of the most memorable experiences of my professional life. I met there Adenike, our lead accountant, who provided extremely good service and professional support. I didn’t see it coming when she told me her personal story. Adenike came from a poor family who could not afford to send her to school, so she worked in two parallel jobs to support her education. To have the chance to work in a profession, let alone for a successful and growing company where the salary would support her children’s education, was not only a privilege but an honor for her. The people in this office didn’t “have” to work, they “got” to work. This is when I realized how deep the gaps can be between people who come from families with means to support their development to ones who don’t. I cherish the possibility I had but even more respect the ones who overcame their challenges and were able to reach high although their starting point was far behind.

I was aware that I was different when I had the huge challenge of leading the first in three years of due diligence for Check Point. Leading a deal of ~$200M as the sole finance due diligence and the leader of the integration was a challenging way above my skills, experience, and what I believed I could handle. However, I decided to do the best that I could, stayed at work until late at night for a few months, learned from colleagues outside of the company, and read a lot of professional materials to close the knowledge gaps. In the end, I was able to meet all the requirements and perform solid due diligence with many useful insights which were used post-closing as the basis for the proper integration of the acquired company and its personnel into Check Point. While my team members, with lower levels of assignments and workload, were cracking under pressure, I noticed that I was able to take over more than the usual workload and tension. Significantly, more than the rest of my team, and continue to deliver excellent results. I understood that I have abilities to learn on my own and perform at the highest standards even if I didn’t do this kind of action in the past.
